Drifter Tully Gal in Night Riders originally arrived at Splinter Rock to see Louise again. He purchased a spirited mustang from Sugar Lagg, only to be thrown and have to chase the mustang into the malpais where Lagg has his wild horse camp, and finds out that Lagg has dammed up Splinter Creek, the chief source of water for the ranching community and artificially creating the drought conditions. The explosive situation is further complicated when Tully observes a clandestine meeting between Daimler, Lagg, and Ellery Vines in a deadfall in Splinter Rock. Giff Cheshire's Western stories are notable for their complex characters, expert pacing, and authentic backgrounds.

Tully Gale wasn't the kind to cause trouble, but when he happens upon a dam, he quickly realizes it was withholding the only source of water for the entire area. And Sugar Lagg had put it there on purpose; he wanted to cause a drought, because he wanted the land for himself, and the horses. To make the stream run again, Tully knew the dam had to go, and to out fox Lagg would take considerable time and effort, not to mention it might cause an all out range war. Giff Chesire has written a fine novel which had originally been published in the early fifties in one of the many western magazines of the times. It's MY kind of book and story, and one I think most anyone would enjoy if given a chance. There's action, and romance, of course, because of when it was written and published; but neither take away from the story or the characters. A good read by one of the best novelists of the west.
