This is the story of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche s transformative time in Italy. In the fall of 1876, the young professor of philology headed to Sorrento at the invitation of his friend, the German writer Malwida von Meysenbug. It was his first trip ever to the South, and author Paolo D Iorio shows in this new book how Nietzsche s time there changed his life and the course of his philosophy. It was in Sorrento that Nietzsche began his attempts to renew German culture in the name of the Wagnerian cause; and it was in Sorrento that the author of "The Birth of Tragedy" (1872) truly emerged. Paolo D Iorio skillfully tells the tale of this metamorphosis: through lectures and discussions, long walks, explorations of the surrounding area with his friend Paul Ree and student Albert Brenner. The trip revived Nietzsche s joyful and trusting sociability and fertilized his creative spirit. It was in Sorrento that Nietzsche started writing "Human, All Too Human" (1878), which many consider the beginning of his mature philosophy. It was here too that Nietzsche broke with Wagner, intellectually if not yet publicly. And it was following this trip that Nietzsche abandoned his post at Bale and started a new philosophical existence under the southern suns of Switzerland, France, and Italy."
