A failed effort to revive the big-budget movie musical, Newsies attempted to create toe-tapping, song-and-dance excitement out of the true story of an 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The "newsies" band together to protest a pay cut by Pulitzer (Robert Duvall), organizing a union to protect their rights and ensure fair wages. They are helped along the way by Medda (Ann-Margret), a local dance-hall performer who befriends the boys and provides an opportunity for an additional song or two. Director Kenny Ortega had previously choreographed Dirty Dancing, and composer Alan Menken had provided the acclaimed scores for Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, but their work here failed to capture the spark of their popular successes. Unable to connect with older or younger viewers, Newsies gained a reputation as a major bomb that cut short an attempt to bring back the live-action musical, though in the intervening years it has gained a small but appreciative cult. This movie consists of an intriguing, semi-historical (though perhaps slightly cheesy) plotline, wonderful music and marvelous dancing! There are very few movies that I would watch twice in a row and this is one of them- because there are so many incredible dancers to watch and talented singers to listen to! Christian Bale's performance if beautiful and almost every other actor sells their part and sells it well. You'll find yourself online, buying the soundtrack, the minute you finish watching every bit of the musical credits!

Great Movie!
I certainly don't agree with the synopsis that this is a "failed attempt". It is a great film with a good story and good acting. One of my all time favorites. And you will find yourself humming some of the songs long after you've watched the movie.

Very Enjoyable!
I found this movie quite delightful. The story line is excellent, and even more so because it is based on a true story. The newsboys - many of whom are orphans or 'street kids' easily win my sympathies, and the villain who abuses the boys easily wins my hatred! The Newsie's songs are very fun and full of action. Very well done. There's a little bit of immodesty where the dance-hall girl is concerned and a little teeny bit of romance. The romance is quite innocent, though, and not worthy of being rated PG. Overall a very enjoyable family film.
