Newman's Own: Movie Songs is another edition in Rhino's Newman's Own series, the somewhat unusual collaboration between the label and Paul Newman's franchise. At first glance, however, Movie Songs is the most logical of the series' volumes, for obvious reasons. Though all of the album's ten songs come from films, the hodgepodge of musical styles makes it less than cohesive: From oldies like Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" to the smooth pop of B.J. Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and Christopher Cross' "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" to instrumentals like Percy Faith's "Theme From a Summer Place," the collection never quite settles into a musical or thematic groove. Michelle Pfeiffer's rendition of "Makin' Whoopee," Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," and Jimmy Durante's "As Time Goes By" are some of the album's other highlights. It may be too eclectic for its own good, but Newman's Own: Movie Songs' budget price and good cause (all proceeds benefit the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, which help children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses) make it difficult to criticize too harshly. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
