Cornetist Jim Cullum's regular group is utilized as the show's house band, with intelligent narration provided by David Holt (centered around whatever the program's topic is that week) and plenty of guest stars. On this CD, Cullum and his septet (which includes clarinetist Brian Oglivie, trombonist Mike Pittsley and pianist John Sheridan) perform Sidney Bechet's "Sweetie Dear" and a lengthy rendition of Hoagy Carmichael's "Washboard Stomp." Various selections find the band welcoming trombonist Dan Barrett (emulating Jack Teagarden on "Wherever There's Love"), pianist Dick Hyman, bassist Bob Haggart, singer Carol Woods, singer/guitarist Marty Grosz ("You Hit the Spot") and trumpeter Doc Cheatham (showcased on "I've Got the World on a String"). Since the show is supposed to have taken place (or at least been broadcast) on New Year's Eve, the joyous studio audience is in a party mood, and the program concludes with a Dixielandish "Auld Lang Syne."
