It is often a personal emotion tempered by the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world in which we live. Although some species inherently have more emotional appeal, it matters little among bird, mammal, fish, invertebrate or plant for there is a commonality in being endangered. Shopping malls, housing projects and highways do not discriminate among life forms. Plants are the foundation of human existence, and concerns voiced on behalf of those that are endangered and threatened have particular significance. Scientists caution that plants have the potential to produce new sources of food, chemicals, energy and medicine for the world's ever increasing population. The concern for endangered and threatened species, however, must be more than a scientific assessment of a species'. Utilitarian value or a moral expression on all creatures' basic right to exist. The Grey Whale, the Bald Eagle and the Robbins' Cinquefoil perhaps symbolize the ever elusive quality of life in our existence; but there is much more. Endangered and threatened species possess the unique ability to force us to ponder our relationship with the natural world we share and make us cognizant of the intricacy and fragility of that relationship. This quality could be their single, greatest value if we endeavor to cherish, to conserve, to understand.
