My mother gave me Never No More when I was 9 or 10 - the same year she gave me Pride & Prejudice. I don't know what prompted her to buy it, except it is about an Irish Catholic family and we were Catholic, though only 1/8 Irish. But I devoured it. Long before Angela's Ashes, Maura Laverty took me through the smelly alleys and crumbling houses of the Irish poor, with a story so bleak at times that I remember having to put the book away, and images so strong that they remain with me five decades later. The book got stored in the attic, and I only rediscovered it when moving myself and books to a different city. I remember thinking, ah - so I didn't imagine this!
