Kubie has written a book in defense of creativity. He argues that neurotic behavior is in no way connected to either inspiration or creativity. Instead he says that the creative person might think and act that way. But to think that ones twisted behavior is necessary for the ability to create artistic work, that is just sick, Kubie says. It will only distort creativity.
To be at the mercy of the subconscious or the conscious, that is to be chained to either chaos or reason. Neither area holds creativity. Kubie argues that it is an area in the middle, the preconscious, that holds the freedom necessary for the creativity to flow.
Kubie is a fine author, and i am sorry to say, somewhat forgotten in the area in the psychology of creativity. If your interested in the complex area of creativity you should not miss this one, along with Kris, Ehrenzweig and May.
