Professor Meier wrote this book in the 1960's on the racial ideologies of Black Americans in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century. This was the Age of Booker T. Washington. His domination of this period would set the initial stage of U. S. race relations and would continue in some form or another until today . The author shows that Washington had his good and bad points as it effected the economic, social, and educational direction of the Black American in the post Civil War period and how his philosophy would effected the rest of the twentieth century and Black and White American relationships as it pertained to race. Anyone who wants to see how America got to their present situation should read this book. Although it is dated, it is a good jumping off point to the study of race relation in the United State. It was a landmark study.
