(See Diagram XXII. B.) (b) Lay the part to be repaired upon a stiff card, and tack it down firmly on all sides about an inch and a half from the edge of the hole. (c) Prepare the patch in the same way, remembering to have it longer than the hole at first. (d) Tack the patch exactly in place. (e) With great care graft it in top and bottom, and Swiss-darn each side about six stitches beyond the edge of the hole. Experienced needlewomen sometimes prefer this last method, but though the result is admirable, it is so much more difficult to attain that it is unwise to worry children with it Stocking-web Tissue. Introductory Remarks.--A lesson in working the stocking-web tissue, as it is called, naturally and appropriately follows those on Swiss darning and grafting. It may be described as weaving in a patch so as to exactly correspond with the surrounding fabric. Its principal use is to fill up a hole in any article of wearing apparel made of the ordinary stocking-web. The actual stitch is precisely the same as that employed in Swiss darning and grafting, the only difference being that in stocking-web tissue a foundation has to be made upon which to work. Therefore, when the children have become tolerably expert in the two former processes, they will readily learn this. Of course, as before, the class must be small, because the children will need constant and watchful supervision and help individually.
