Thunderbirds Are Now! follow their French Kiss debut, Justamustache, with this similarly squirty split EP on Conspirators in Sound/Action Driver. Necks is another rocks-off hit, a fun romp for the sexy and coldly cynical. Moist denim meets electric beats on the Mustache reprise "Bodies Adjust," and "Do the Splitz & Say, 'Neat'!" heightens that salaciousness with androgynous yelping and an unshakeable bassline. "Feel that beat/And get up off your seat" -- it's a coed kissing party in the executive men's room, and you're on the list. TAN! have very familiar touchstones, from post-punk's formative era all the way through to Brainiac and the Rapture. But it takes more than one cowbell to fill up a dancefloor, and these guys take their shot with an engaging mixture of squelch, impatience, and primping bravado. Elsewhere on Necks: "Surrounded by Skanks" drops another terrific bassline, tying it into keyboard tinkering at a circuitry level, and "Pink Motorcycle Helmet" (from TAN!'s first album, also on Action Driver) gets the "Patrick Dempsey" remix treatment. Mostly that means more keyboard effects. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
