Dunton founded the successful 'The Athenian Gazette' otherwise known as 'Casuistical Mercury' which was the first popular periodical in England with the longevity of seven years in print. Readers would send their queries on any topic which were answered by the 'Athenian Society', a club purported to be learned men who met at Smith's Coffee House.
