Does your child have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)? Do you find the special education process with all the meetings and excessive terminology to be quite overwhelming? Do you think your child might have a disability and needs a school evaluation but you don't know where to start? Or, are you familiar with the process but want to learn more and sharpen your ability to play an active role on your child's team as an effective advocate? This guide can help! Knowing how the process works, your rights as a parent, basic federal and state laws, understanding the value of teamwork, and maintaining high but realistic expectations are the power tools needed to help build and execute a successful plan for your child. Tisha Eisenhuth, M.S.Ed., has navigated special education in a public school for twelve years as a parent of a child with Autism, and for over six years supporting other parents through the special education process as an Ohio Parent Mentor. This role involves providing direct assistance, including attending special education team meetings for students within grades prek-12, addressing questions about laws and compliant documentation, providing resources, and promoting effective collaboration between home and school. Tisha's unique perspective has been shaped by these personal and professional experiences, and in collaborating with school personnel through both of these roles. She co-presented the session "A Peek Behind the Special Education Curtain - The Parent Mentor Perspective" for the 2023 national conference OCALICON. This journey also led to the desire to pursue higher education and earn a Master of Science in Education - Special Education - Autism and Related Disabilities degree from Youngstown State University. Tisha is passionate about helping other parents through the complexities of special education and supporting students of all abilities to help them reach their potential. She lives with her husband Joe and son Zachary near Cleveland, Ohio.
