Great Illustrated Overview
This isn't a scholarly work, but Ireland does go into some detail, on everything from technical innovations to social factors; certainly more depth than one might expect from a heavily illustrated work. The illustrations, by the way, are crucial for anyone who, like me, doesn't already have an intimate knowledge of sailing ships, rigging, etc. Ireland's affection and admiration for the Royal Navy is apparent.
