Where most recordings of whale sounds focus more of less exclusively on the whales themselves, this latest release from Nature Recordings presents the varied sounds recorded by producer Richard Hooper as he traveled offshore and on land in southeastern Alaska, the summer feeding grounds of the mighty humpback whales. We hear the shipboard noises of the research vessel Acania, witness a storm at sea, hear the playful sounds of porpoises, observe herring churning the surface of the water, and marvel at the underwater songs of the humpback whales, as well as their blow sounds, breathing, and a rare trumpeting. We also are treated to a "bubble net," a sequence in which a pod of whales surround a school of herring before breaking to the surface in a feeding frenzy. The second half takes us ashore to delight in the cries of bald eagles, the sweet sounds of songbirds, the dripping of ice caves, the rushing of snow-fed rivers, and the tranquil sounds of dawn at a wilderness lake. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, Rovi
