So viele grossartige Erfindungen sehen wir heutzutage gemacht, so viele k???hne menschliche Eingriffe in das von Natur Gewordene geschehen, dass wir in Gefahr sind uns uber alle fr???heren Geschlechter zu erheben, als h???tten wir wirklich Neues geschaffen, welches sich ehedem niemand auch nur als moglich denken konnte. Dennoch m???ssen wir bei genauerer Ueberlegung gestehen, dass auch durch uns jener Spruch in seiner wesentlichen Bedeutung nicht umgestossen wird. Wir beherrschen Raum und Zeit in einer nie dagewesenen Weise; aber die Anf???nge dazu sind vorl???ngst gemacht Wir sind in die Ge heimnisse der Natur, ihres Werdens und Vergehens tief eingedrungen; aber weder stehen wir am Ziele, noch k???nnen wir bei vorl???ngst gewesenen Geschlechtern und V???lkern eben das Bestreben, welches uns beseelt, verkennen. Und die Hauptsache ist geblieben wie sie war: inmitten der Natur steht der Mensch, als Einzelwesen in dieser seiner Existenz verg???nglich und kraftlos, der Natur gleich allen andern Gesch???pfen unterworfen, als Gattung indes eben verm???ge der Natur sich gegen dieselbe behauptend und die Herrschaft ???ber sie anstrebend. Und das Verhalten der Einzelnen gegen???ber der Natur war und ist in gleicher Weise verschieden: der Eine giebt sich ihr hin und geht in ihr auf, sei es ohne Bewusstsein, wie der rohe Naturmensch, sei es mit Bewusstsein und in der Ueberzeugung, dass die Natur das H???chste sei; der Andre dagegen f???hlt in sich etwas alle Natur weit Ueberragendes und von ihr spezifisch Verschiedenes, und uber sich etwas mit diesem Verwandtes, Allumfassendes und Allm???chtiges. K???nnte nun die erstere Richtung jemals allgemein bei der Menschheit zur Herrschaft gelangen, so w???re die Folge eine Angleichung an die Natur und ihre Gesetze, wie dieselben in dem sonstigen Naturleben, ausserhalb der menschlichen Gesellschaft, ungehemmt sich auswirken. Dar???ber kann uns die Ver gangenheit belebten: nicht als w???re jene Herrschaft des Naturalismus' wie wir die betreffende Richtung f???glich benennen m???gen, und jene Angleichung jemals v???llig eingetreten, aber weil die Anfange dazu in fr???heren Perioden gef???rderter und greifbarer vorliegen, w???hrend seit der christlichen Zeit die entgegenstehende Richtung ganz ausserordentlich erstarkt und noch fast in jedem Momente ???berm???chtig gewesen ist.
