Unbelievably realistic and ...
This is the first book by this author I have read and I have only one regret!! I didn't start with the first one in the series. It stands alone all by itself but I kept feeling as if I walked into a party late and although I enjoy myself I am aware of something missing. It is a love story and a story about survival in all its forms. It has twists and turns that are so unexpected I had to catch my breath in a couple of places. It is not a traditional vampire book, or even a traditional lycanthrope novel. It is truly unique. The characters are people you either love to enjoy or love to hate, but no wishy washy feelings in this book.

Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Series is so good that I am buying all the books in hardback to replace my paperback copies. I've read them so often that I wear them out. That being said. I am facinated with the Power base that is being built by Anita, Richard and Jean Claude. Richard, Anita and Jean Claude have come together to meld their power into one unit allowing them to have the potential to be an incredibly powerful force. The only thing that has the potential to tear them apart, much less kill them all is Richard. However; Anita is beginning to grow up and maybe beginning to realize that life is not what you want, but what you make of it. She also needs to learn to trust in herself and the good inside her. She is basically a good person that could be the driving force in the relationship. Anita will save the people that she see's as belonging to her and if she can't save them she will make sure it can't happen to others. She is becoming stonger. Richard is still the same- making the reader wonder if he wants some cheese and crackers with his whine. He needs to come to terms with real life and not the fairie tale that he wants it to be. He needs to realize that he could ruin them all and not just himself with his selfish ways. Jean Claude is beginning to learn how to deal with Anita and keep his relationship alive. I believe that he will learn how to motivate Anita without causing her undue stress and cause her to weigh the options of good vs. evil. She already knows what's good and what's evil. New Characters are added, Micha and his crew enter Anita's life and begin to play important parts in her daily life. The Leopard pard will become stronger with Micah and Anita backing them. Overall this is an enjoyable book and I will continue to read the series for as long as Ms. Hamilton is willing to write them with such excellenct Characters that we can invest our time in.
