The ecclesial situation in Eastern Germany confronts the church service with totally new challenges. Key terms of liturgical theology are involved: What is the meaning of tradition when it is not transmitted? How can liturgy be 'effective' when there is no or only little religious knowledge? What kind of liturgical language is needed? The Eastern German context with its deep impacts of secularisation is perhaps a sensor for fundamental liturgical developments in Central Europe. In Leipzig, where the majority of the population is not affiliated to any church, two new churches have been built: the catholic Provost Church of St. Trinitatis and the University Church. The present volume explores possible conceptions of church service in a non-confessional context, basing its reflections on the architectonical, liturgical and practical conditions of these two sacral spaces.
