Decades ago a sacred oath was broken. And as it broke, the magic held by the oldest tribe in Alba was shattered. Their power over the natural world lost, the gift of foretelling gone, now only the small magics are left to Moirin and her people: the ability to conceal themselves from sight, and a skill to coax plants to grow. I have read the novel 3 times, always something I missed or just enjoying the adventures of the characters more each time.
It may take place in a fantasy but the people in the novel could be us.
I will read it again.

A tentative but promising start to a new series
I cannot communicate the depth of my relief to find this Jacqueline Carey's new protagonist so interesting and unique in her own right. For her new series, set in the same world as her Kushiel's Legacy series,(only a few hundred years later), Carey moves the action to Alba. Moirin is naive and wild where previous protagonists were urbane and savvy. Carey's linguistic skills are still impressive, but I get the sense that she is still adjusting to being without her vast cast of characters from the first six books in this world.
Some narrative elements felt uneven (particularly the sexual scenes, which seemed almost mandatory instead of inspired by the feelings of the characters), so I am curious to see if Carey settles into this new time period in the next few books.
Ultimately, this book is readable and unpredictable, so I recommend that people give it a try. It isn't perfect, but it is enthusiastic.
