Kat (Annabeth Gish), Daisy (Julia Roberts), and Jojo (Lili Taylor) are three working-class women just out of high school who have jobs at the same pizza parlor in the resort community of Mystic, Connecticut. Kat wants to study astronomy at Yale; when she starts baby-sitting for Tim (William R. Moses), a wealthy Yale graduate summering in Mystic, she finds herself falling in love with him, even though he's married and nearly twice her age. Daisy, who isn't sure what she wants from life, starts going with Charlie (Adam Storke), a recent law school dropout, though she starts to think that it may be more to rebel against her family than out of genuine affection. And Jojo is attracted to Bill (Vincent D'Onofrio), but she doesn't want to get married (she's already left him at the altar once); when Bill announces that he's no longer willing to have sex without marriage, she has to decide if his affections are worth a lifetime commitment. Conchata Ferrell appears in a supporting role as Leona, the proprietor of the pizza parlor, who zealously guards the secret formula of her sauce. Mark Deming, Rovi

TITLE: Mystic Pizza
GENRE: Romantic coming of age comedy
CAST: Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish, Lily Taylor, Vincent D'onofrio, Adam Storke, William R Moses, Conchata Farrell and Matt Damon
PLOT: Three teenage waitresses mix love and growing up. Most of the twists which love can take are explored here.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 8.7 of 10; The acting is superb as you can tell from the cast list, and most of them can count this effort as their first big part (Well Damon's was a bit one but it was his first). The dialoge and character development flow together. The bits of humor are well concieved. The drawback is the movie's failure to really deliver on chemistry between supposed lovers. The closest it comes to chemistry is the bad that flows periodically between Taylor and D'onofrio. But, Julia Roberts at times here has never looked more like a pretty girl. After this, she's a pretty woman
DVD BONUS: None in my copy but I'm sure this film was so important to some of our biggest names that there will eventually be look backs for sale.
ADDED NOTES: Yup, a lot of what would become recognizable names here. If you can't recognize him, Damon is the dark haired beardy macho type with bulging biceps at the bar who takes the three bullseyes in a row bet. He has all of twenty seconds on camera but he shines!
