Seller's Description:
This is a VERY GOOD condition hardback for its age. The front cover has fine gold printing, edges and corners good++, bands w/wear, small tears; some pages NOT opened, some gently opened, some opened roughly, but not injuring text. NOT exlibrary. Hardback, 6 x 9", 44 Chapters, 8 Illustrations, 404 pages. This book is EXTREMELY SPECIAL! It is a "Souvenir 142nd Anniversary Dinner of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of City of New York March Seventeenth Nineteen Twenty-six Hotel Astor". It is authored by and relates the dashing life story of Joseph Clarke (1853-1926). As an Irishman, he fought the English in ireland & was forced to flee to the USA. In America. Clarke worked for the New York Herald. His recollections of several interviews with noted individuals includes a 3 page section on Custer and his visit to the Herald office before leaving for the 1876 Campaign. Mary Baker Eddy (Founder of Christian Science, pages 331-342 + reproduced letter dated May 1, 1901) Henry M. Stanley, Henry Ward Beecher, Thomas Edison, Roscoe Conkling + others are discussed in this fine volume. The recollections and interviews are fascinating, appear to be even handed and far better then the classic yellow journalism of the time!
