A Beautiful Classic
This is one of the books which helped make 35 mm photography an accepted thing with the average amateur (and professional). In the 30s, 40s, and 50s, photography magazines were filled with arguments as to whether or not 35mm was a good (or even, viable) medium. Paul Wolff's books, this one and the earlier, "My First Ten Years With the Leica," were amoungst the most persuasive arguments to be made. In addition, this volume on color photography, gives a very pleasant picture of Germany in the immediate post war years.
Some would say it is an unrealistic view, but none the less it's lovely. Wolff was an M.D. who'd become a commercial photographer whose imagery is always notable for the pleasant subject matter and treatment (no ash can school here) and often for the poster effects of which he is a master. I desperately wanted a copy of this beautiful book when I was young but couldn't afford it. Now, I can, and very pleased I am indeed.
