Founded in 1933 by Leonard Slye (who became Roy Rogers when he left the group in 1937 to become a movie star), the Sons of the Pioneers had a smooth as silk vocal style and, thanks in no small part to the songwriting skills of group members Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer, created a California cowboy landscape that corresponded to the public's perception of a lost Golden Age, much like what another California group, the Beach Boys, did 30 years later with their surfing and car songs.
