One could only account for it in the technical language of the indictment, that it was " by instigation of the devil." But the question which this incident so prominently enforces is, "Could such a man as this have pleaded 'Not guilty' f" his features, and the cold drops of sweat stood upon his brow: his eyes swam, his tongue refused to speak, and for a moment or two he seemed lost to every sense. The name again rung upon his ear, and to the question asked in such a careless, heedless tone, the wretched boy gasped out, almost inaudibly, the faltering reply, " Not guilty." The aspect and demeanour of the youth, so utterly at variance with the usual exhibitions of the place, and so strikingly contrasted too with the calm self-possession of him that stood by his side, made a deep impression in his favour on many, and especially on the mind of the judge who was to try him, and he spoke a few kind and gentle words to the lad to reassure him. This judge was one whose loving heart, almost womanly in its tenderness, was ever ready in every relation of life, at the bar, on the bench, in his own household, in the wider range of the world, to yearn in pity and compassion over the sufferings and sorrows of those with whom he came in contact, or who in any way were brought to his notice. But especially did his heart gush forth in tenderness to the young, and never was he so happy as when he was seeking out and gathering around him a band of young men, in whose welfare he would take the liveliest interest, and devote the most unwearied efforts, by example, by paternal counsel, by...
