Nestled in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, the town of Johnson City saw its first AIDS patient in August 1985. Working in Johnson City was Abraham Verghese, a young Indian doctor specializing in infectious diseases who became, by necessity, the local AIDS expert. Out of his experience comes a startling, ultimately uplifting portrait of the American heartland.

Having become enamored of Dr. Verghese's writing in "Cutting For Stone" I had to read more by this author. He tells his story of being an infectious disease doctor in Johnson City. Tennessee in the early days of the AIDS diagnosis. It is a difficult balance in this Bible Belt community but he manages to understand the dread of those who have this diagnosis as well as the distress of their families who have to negotiate this rocky terrain in which the next steps seem unknown and uncharted. I can only say that the heartfelt concern of this medical man could be an example for others in the medical field. His interest in his patients goes well beyond the norm. Great story!
