If you are a frustrated surgeon and want to know in detail how to do an amputation under difficult circumstances, this is a book for you. The book has a great story idea, but not well written....confusing, to say the least.

a great read
I especially enjoyed this book as I am from the Albany area where Mary's story starts and am in the health care field. Asisde from that, the book gives a gritty view of the Civil War from the point of view of those trying to care for the wounded. It also portrays the social constraints placed on women of the time as Mary tries to become a surgeon at a time when it is not an acceptable profession for a women.
