I am a typi cal Englishman my grandfather was a Lowland Scot He came to London, married a London woman and begot my father. My father married a woman whose blood was partly Cheshire and partly Westmorland and begot me. I wasborn in London and this is not typical of Englishmen today lived in the house in which I was born until my twenty-third year. I did not visit my grandfathers native country until I was thirty seven, when I found that I liked it a great deal better than I had expected to do. In the foregoing paragraph the word I oc curs nine times only once belonging to Mr. Shaw. But the insistence on the I is not made without deliberation. This book is called My England, and, if the reader is to make any sense of it, he must know from what point of view it is writ ten. I begin as I mean to go on.
