This is a story about a young man who has been raised by an older cousin to whom he is very closely attached (as this appears to be his only living relative). This is a household of men only, confirmed bachelors all, UNTIL the elder cousin (Ambrose ) suddenly, impulsively weds an Italian woman, Rachel. Before long, Ambrose is seriously ill and writing disturbing letters casting some suspicion on Rachel before his sudden death. Soon his young cousin is equally obsessed with Rachel and a very suspensful story follows. I did enjoy this book, as I do all by this author, but I did find Phillip a difficult character to be sympathetic to. He is young and quite foolish and a social moron. He seems self centered and inconsiderate of people who have been his lifelong friends, Louise in particular. Also, the end, while very good, was just a little too easy. Very good, but "Rebecca" and "The Scapegoat" are still my favorites.

Phillip's older cousin, mentor and guardian, Ambrose meets and marries the beautiful Rachel. The couple is traveling abroad, so slow arriving letters are the only way that Phillip and Ambrose are able to stay in touch. Through their correspondence, Phillip learns that Ambrose is very ill and possibly dying. What's more, Ambrose believes his illness is the doing of his young wife Rachel. When Ambrose dies suddenly, Phillip seeks revenge on his beautiful widowed cousin Rachel. What better way for Phillip to ruin Rachel than to pretend to fall in love with her and see that she also has an early demise. After all, it is the family fortune Rachel is after and young Phillip can also be quite charming. Phillip's plan however does not work out the way he anticipated. This is a spelling binding quick read. Highly recommended.
