All the ships that were riding at anchor in the open bay when the gale came on, had slipped their anchors and put to sea, preferring there to meet the fury of the tempest, rather than to be cast hopeless, helpless wrecks upon the land. All around the coast, the sea, lashed into mountain waves, such as none living had ever looked upon before, was breaking in torrents of rolling surf upon the rocks, exhibiting a scene of real grandeur to those whom the wide-spreading calamity of the night had left sufficiently free from suffering to appreciate the sublime and beautiful. Inland, a most distressing picture of ruin presented itself in every direction. The town was in ruins, many of the inhabitants lying bruised, mutilated, and bleeding, where roofs and walls had fallen in and crushed them; and not a few, spared the hours of excruciating agony which fell to the lot of some of their neighbours, had the life crushed out of them at once, and were dug from beneath the ruins under which they lay, only to be placed in such humble coffins as could hastily be procured, and so hidden away in the dust of the neighbouring churchyards. The whole face of the country was laid waste. Scarcely a sign of vegetation was to be seen, except here and there a few patches of sickly green. The surface of the ground appeared as if a desolating fire had run through the land, scorching and burning up the productions of the earth. Multitudes of trees were blown down, torn up by the roots with the force of the hurricane, as if some mighty leverage had been employed to tear them out of the earth; while the few that remained standing, stripped entirely of their boughs and foliage, looked as if they had passed through the blight of winter.
