Finally, the youngest and last of the fruits, Johann Christian, sprang boldly and merrily far and ever farther over meadows and fields, bounding at length into the lap of a charming shepherdess., Not far from the Wesergebirge, in the little capital of Buckeburg, which lies at the foot of the Harz mountain, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, the youngest but one of Bach's sons (born in the year 1732), built his modest nest. The valiant Count Wilhelm of Lippe, whose victorious campaigns in Spain and Portugal, whose fearlessness and perseverance during the sieges of Minden, Wesel, and Marburg had made his name celebrated in all German and foreign lands, had given to Johann Christoph the title of Court Cantor, and appointed for his dwelling a vine-covered house. The pleasant little town, with its ancient church; the pious little congregation, which never grew impatient if the Cantor played the longest preludes, and at most only nodded a little as it listened; the pretty peasant girls in their curious costume, whose eyes looked so brightly from beneath the black, pointed cap, and who smiled so pleasantly in answer to his ' Good day!'--all this was home-like to him, for he belonged so thoroughly to those natures which were made for a quiet life. As every plant requires a certain aspect, if its flowers are to come to light in full beauty, so it happens that only in certain atmospheres do the minds of individual men, and especially of musicians, attain to their full development. Thrice happy those whose birth and circumstances have, from the beginning, placed them in their proper light!
