"Have you ever wanted to learn how to play an instrument or anything that requires a new skill? 76-year-old James Mitchell, a non-musician, set out to do just that--but not one instrument, the entire orchestra. Musical Chairs is a bow by blow adventure that follows Mitchell on his quest to perform excerpts from the classical repertory with just twelve lessons and practice on each instrument. His more than three-year journey provides a platform allowing his imagination to take him to unexpected places. As he delves into music history, immersing himself in the works of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and other great composers, Mitchell does battle with the orchestra in this breezy, often humorous account that informs as well as delights. He weaves in tales of Tarzan and Jane, doing surgery on a double bass, falling in love with a cello, and spy games between the Stradavari and Amati families in 17th-century Tuscany, to name a few."--

ââ?¬Å"Musical Chairs: A Bow by Blow Adventureââ?¬Â? by James Mitchell, is a self-help journey of one manââ?¬â?¢s quest to become skilled in every musical instrument in the orchestra. That would be a feat in itself, but this gentleman was 76 years old at the time, and a ââ?¬Å"non-musician.ââ?¬Â? You may be asking yourself how he did this, or why. This musical adventure is unique, compelling, and a guide that you can actually use in your own life to master something, regardless of your age.
His plan took him on a three-year path to places he never thought possible. He uses the music history of the classical composers, from Bach to Mozart, as his foundation, and he delivers his story with aplomb and wit. Some of the tales are quirky and unexpected, and thats what makes this such a fun read. Even if you arent into music all that much, this account will wow you for the originality alone and will help you in ways you may not expect.
Mitchell is the perfect author to connect with if youre looking for a mentor of sorts who can help motivate you to start, pursue, or finish your goals. What I like is the pure spontaneity of this mans goal to learn 11 orchestral instruments (the double bass, cello, viola, violin, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, flute, trombone, trumpet, and French horn) by taking 12 lessons on each one, each instrument given 3 months to learn. I also enjoyed the way he lays out his story in the book, which is a chapter devoted to each instrument.
This journal-type book spans more than 3 years, the time it took to complete his quest. Personally, my favorite chapter is on the violin, where he describes how the violin in the hands of a beginner sounds terrible, if not annoying, but when it is mastered by the same person, it sounds so beautiful. Itââ?¬â?¢s amazing to think how one person, even with lessons, can learn to go from terrible to beautiful with practice, patience, and sometimes a measure of talent. ââ?¬Å"Musical Chairs: A Bow by Blow Adventureââ?¬Â? by James Mitchell is one slice-of-life story that I for one would love to see come to film.
