But while Tertis' own magisterial performance of the Bax Sonata is still available on disc, this performance by violist Doris Lederer is nearly as well played and even more unreservedly romantic. And while Bowen wrote his Viola Sonata for Tertis and often played it with him, their performance is not available on disc, and Lederer captures the deeply expressive spirit of the music with passionate conviction. Jane Coop is a superb accompanist who partakes as deeply in the spirit of the music and the performance as Lederer. And Lederer and Coop's performance of Bowen's ardently expressive Phantasy for viola and piano is simply a convincing and compelling performance of wonderfully Romantic music.
