The term Golden Apple refers to Westchester County, a wealthy suburb of New York City. Part One, The Worm in the Golden Apple, begins with the discovery of a female body in a county park. Marino was not originally assigned to investigate because the case was not supposed to be solved. Marino uses his contacts to nose around and eventually gets pulled deeply into the case. Part Two, Doctor of Death, involves the serial homicide of nurses from several hospitals throughout the Golden Apple. Part Three, Love Poisoning, a man consumed by jealousy and greed slowly poisons his wife to death, but flees the state when Marino starts to get too close. When the killer surfaces again with a new identity and a new wife, his jealousy and greed also return.
