If you like murder mysteries that aren't very serious or violent, you will like this series about a late 19th century midwife who solves New York City crimes. Themes include the historic diversity of immigrants, women's roles among all classes of society, police corruption and the silly customs and abuse of the poor of the upper class. That might not sound like fun but the characters are well developed and the descriptions of the city life are lively.
