Leonard and Hap are a kind of rural East Texas odd couple. Leonard, a huge butt-kicking gay black man, and Hap, the more laid back white underachiever, make for a unique buddy novel. I loved the rural setting, the shanties, abandoned houses, Baptist churches and markets with old men playing dominoes on the porch. I thought, however, the story itself fell a little short. It wasn?t as tense or as gripping as it wanted to be. Still, an A for originality and character if not for real tough guy action and clever twists.
