The Mrs. Pollifax stories are suspenseful and well-written, Mrs. P. is charming, and the books are hard to put down. The author is entranced by Buddhism and other eastern mystcisms, which comes through in the story lines, and although I do not agree with this theological perspective, I enjoyed the books very much. Dorothy Gilman is a keen observor, very witty, and each book also includes much local color and information about the exotic locale. Very entertaining.

Fantasy and Mystery...
The mysteries of Villa Franca, the threat of Aristotle, the excitement of a possible Caesarean relic and a host of pursuers all combine to make this a fast-paced read that was quite enjoyable. My only complaint is that it's getting harder and harder for me to accept some of the things that Mrs. Pollifax accomplishes. Granted, she's never been your typical older woman, but who can really believe that she could knock out TWELVE grown men with karate chops, all within the space of a few minutes? AFTER a speedy ride downhill on a bicycle. C'MON! There is suspension of belief and then there's complete fantasy which latter, I have to say, is the realm that Mrs. Gilman leads us into with each successive book. As entertaining as they are, I wish they were just a little bit more realistic! But then again, who would believe in Mrs. Pollifax as a CIA agent in the first place? The whole series is based on a highly unlikely premise, so I guess I shouldn't complain...especially since, despite my complaints, I still greatly enjoy the books!
