Haunted by the Shadow of Rebecca
Susan Hill took on the daunting task of writing the sequel to Daphne DuMaurier's much loved 'REBECCA.' In this story, the second Mrs. DeWinter narrates as she did in the first novel. She and her husband, Maxim DeWinter have traveled Europe, staying in one country after another. Never do they settle for long. They live in fear that they will be recognized and talk will arise of the mysterious fire that destroyed the Manderley estate and the questionable suicide of the beautiful Rebecca, the first Mrs. De Winter. However, the second Mrs. DeWinter, still quiet but no longer weak, feels that she has become the protector of Maxim, as he has been hers. When Maxim's sister dies, new hauntings begin when a card from the long-dead Rebecca appears. Finding a neglected country house, the DeWinters return to England and attempt a new beginning far from Manderley. But the second Mrs. Dewinter holds many accumlulating secrets that ulimately will destroy the couple's thin threads of happiness. Ms. Hill does a wonderful job capturing the style of Daphne DuMaurier's 'REBECCA.' Read the original novel first. This book is most enjoyable and very well written. If you loved 'REBECCA', you will be entralled with this sequel.
