I saw the movie first (about 10 times), then had to buy the book that Melvyn Douglas holds up in his beginning monologue (same dust jacket). There are SO many addition bits of detail that really makes this a truly enjoyable, yet light read. Looking for an escape? This could be it. Be prepared for several good chuckles though!

Are you building a home, or stepping into Hell?
Eric Hodgins passed away in 1971, but left us with a wonderful legacy entitled Mr. Blandings builds his dream house. Although fiction, it closely follows the experiences he had when he built a home in New Milford, CT at the very beginning of the movement of city dwellers into the suburbs.
Not only is the book a very good read, but the lessons Mr. Hodgins and his wife learned about dealing with the construction of a home are invaluable even today.
The book was made into a movie starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, and is still funny to this day.
