Obviously film-making is a tough world where friends are not always friends and stars are often capricious and difficult. This is not such an enjoyable book as Josh Logan's earlier one: 'Josh, My Up & Down, In & Out Life' - it's not so tight, and some stories have less than a punch, but that's not to say it's not worth reading. If you are a film buff, the entry into the sets of some of the important films Josh Logan has made is worth experiencing. The behaviour of the stars is astonishing, given how difficult it is to get into movies and then to remain a star. Marlon Brando comes across as mischievous (not always benign), Kim Novak's worry about wearing a wig for 'Picnic' seems unnecessary, and the saga of Bette Davis' behaviour on stage in 'Miss Moffat' is nail-biting: "At one point she turned to the audience and said, to our horror, "How can I play this scene? Morgan Evans is supposed to be on-stage. Morgan Evans, get out here"......The audience, under her spell, cheered and applauded..." (p.283) Later on, she realised she was wrong, and again addressing the audience, did apologise, but who in the audience could stay absorbed in the play after that? Great stuff for a book, but not for a night at the theatre.
Surprisingly enough, Josh Logan reserves his admiration for Marilyn Monroe, surprisingly because of all the bad press previously written about her. Mitzi Gaynor, Rossano Brazzi, William Holden, Vanessa Redgrave, insights into these stars are all here. Friends' betrayal during the making of the film 'Mr. Roberts', that's all here too, and all in all the book is worth having as an addition to 'Josh, My Up & Down, In & Out Life' to round out this director's oeuvre.
