Morning & Evening is a devotional book covering the time of Pentecost (May-July) in the Church year. The recommended readings come from the Daily Lectionary which can be found in the Lutheran Service Book. It assumed you would read one reading in the morning and one in the evening. It is set up to read the New Testament lesson in the morning and the Old Testament lesson in the evening. If you are using my other book Pray Unceasingly, you may want to use the longer reading for the chapter reading of one office and the devotion for the chapter reading of another office, depending on how you are using that breviary's options. Now it should be noted that this is not a commentary and is not meant to be one. A devotional is meant to focus on a verse or several verses and the reading that follows is to help us to guide our hearts and minds toward heavenly things. Its purpose is to help us to grow spiritually and to think deeply about that scripture passage. If you disagree with the direction of the devotion that is still a good thing because it got you thinking about it. The Holy Spirit may have your thoughts move in a completely different direction from the devotion because that is what you need to understand at the time. This devotional is meant to be read in a conversational tone. You will find the language and syntax to be very colloquial. We are having a conversation. If sentence fragments bother you, consider this to be a spiritual exercise of tolerance.
