The Duke of Tresham is hell bent on punishing Jane for several reasons. She, however, isn't subdued and returns his verbal barbs quite naturally. He is taken with her "golden" hair and verbal sparring. She eventually submits to her increasing attraction to him. The emotional appeal of the story was very good, until I grew tired of his forever assuming a negative opinion of her. Yes, the duke had a load emotional baggage, but I think it went on too long and so did his punishing her for his feelings and reaction to her. I wish she had cut about seventy-five pages from the mid-section and added a few at the end, for the resolution. All in all, though, I did enjoy it.
