Volume II, containing 'Angelina', and 'The Knapsack', illustrated with a frontispiece. Half-title is present. Collated, complete. Volume III, containing 'The Prussian Vase' and 'Mademoiselle Panache', illustrated with a frontispiece. Collated, bound without half-title. Volume IV, containing 'The Good Aunt', illustrated with a frontispiece. Collated, bound without half-title. Volume V, containing 'The Good French Governess', illustrated with a frontispiece. Half-title is present. Collated, complete. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'George Benson Strutt'. The Strutt family was a prominent manufacturing family based in Belper, Derbyshire. George's father, Jedidiah, founded several mills, and invented the Derby rib machine, which was used for the manufacturing of silk stockings. Jedidah was also the backer and partner of Richard Arkwright, the noted English inventor who was the driving force behind the development of the spinning frame. George was responsible for running the mills and the estate, ensuring adequate housing for his workforce, and arranging supplies of provisions for the population around the mills, which was growing at this time due to the Industrial Revolution. George also helped to provide schools, Sunday schools, and places of worship. A collection of moral tales for children, entertaining stories intended to teach children moral and behavioural lessons in Georgian England. These moral tales were incredibly popular at the time, when novels were still viewed with some suspicion by the general public. Maria Edgeworth was a prolific author during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her works, including 'Belinda', helped to have a significant effect on the evolution of the European novel. Her children's novels in particular held great moral lessons at their core, a popular feature of literature works at the time. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the boards and spines. Some loss to the head and tail of the spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. Cracks to the front joints of Volumes I, II, IV and V. Small cracks to the head of the rear joints of Volumes IV an V. Mark to the head of the front board of Volume IV. Hinges of Volume I starting but firm. Front hinge of Volumes II and IV are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpapers of Volumes III, IV and V, 'l'etude'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot and handling mark. Small chip to the tail of the frontispiece of Volume II, not affecting image. Closed tear to leaf G6 in Volume II, no loss of text. Small chip to the margin of leaf D11 of Volume III. Leaves H11 and H12 of Volume III with some loss to the margins, not affecting text. Small chip to text of leaf C4 of Volume V, affecting three letters minimally. Good.
