I thought this book was extremely well written and very entertaining. The book may be at a higher reading level for the age group recommended, but can be used to teach multiple subjects. The references to the depression can pertain to a history lesson, as well as all the science references in the book with creating an elixir. Abilene, the protagonist, shares many inner struggles as she finds herself through finding her family history and I feel many kids go through this phase as they enter middle school. This would be a great book to read while students do a family history project. This book was easy to follow and I loved how it almost told two different stories through the eyes of Abilene and also the town, Manifest. The end connected all of the missing links and overall was a great read!
