The majority of gentlemen have accordingly proceeded offensively, and led their forces forward as they were standing at the moment, viz.: the 2nd Corps on Schonfliess and the 5th Division on Boosen. But one must be clear at the same time how the enemy will act. If we succeed in attacking him on two sides and in effecting the junction of two columns on the battlefield, the greatest results are certainly to be expected. So we have done, for example, at Koniggratz in 1866. But is it permissible to suppose this here? No! The enemy will evade such an attack or assume the offensive himself, in order to fall upon one of our separate bodies with superior numbers. The latter must be assumed as the more likely, because it is for him a question of procuring room for the troops which have crossed the river. The position between Malnow and the Aalkasten See has an extent of little over a mile; it can therefore just be occupied by a Division. The 4th Division, of which the 8th Brigade is already in Dolgelin as an Advanced Guard, must be formed up there; the 3rd Division will be assembled behind it at Karzig--Alter Weinberg. Finally, the 5th Division is to close in. Its Rear Guard holds for this purpose the road defile on the Treppliner See. One Brigade will march straight by Falkenhagen to Hohen Jesar, the other advances to Petershagen, in order to support at first the very isolated Rear Guard and to prevent the enemy from advancing to the west. This Brigade then also goes to Hohen Jesar, and the Advanced Guard follows it there by Sieversdorf and Wald Mill.
