Seller's Description:
Very good(-) Illustrated with 43 plates, including the frontispiece and map; some woodcut initials, devices and chapter headers throughout. 2 volumes. Thick 4to, full contemporary calf with gilt spines (quite scuffed and worn; joints cracked but still solid, attractive and generally clean, except for light scattered foxing and the ghost of penciled notations on a handful of the plates). Paris: Saugrain & Charles Estienne Hocherau, 1724. First edition. Overall a very good(-) copy of this rather scarce book. "Comprehensive and meticulous information on the Iroquois and other northern tribes acquired by a long residence among them." Howes L-22. "Lafitau gives very extended and very exact details of the customs, manners and religion of the savages of America...Charlevoix says: "We have nothing so exact upon the subject of which he treats. His parrallel of ancient nations with the American Indians is very ingenious and exhibits as great familiarity with the nations of antiquity in the Old World, as with the aborigines of the new." The author undertook in his lengthy treatise upon the the American Indians, to prove, from the similarity of their customs with those of the ancient nations inhabiting northern and central Asia, that they must be the descendants of emigrants from Tartary...the work is a grand cyclopaedia of Indian history, and customs at that date. The numerous engravings...are finely executed illustrations of aboriginal life and peculiarities."--Field 850; Sabin 38596; Howes L-22.
