Mrs. Sarah Joseph Hale published a revised edition for American audiences as early as 1845. Lowenstein lists nine American editions of this work before 1860. It was a favorite of Elizabeth David who once ranked it as the greatest cookbook in the English language. John and Karen Hess echo this opinion, calling it "one of the finest cookbooks in the English language" (The Taste of America. New York, 1977). Especially noteworthy is the clear, orderly and detailed recipe writing style.
