The present teaching of classics is as though no man ever spoke them; indeed, this really is, in a sense, true. I doubt whether one schoolboy in a hundred knows that there were two 'latins'-the book form in classical manner of Cicero, and the popular form of Terence - the one the language of the law courts, and the other the common talk of the street.
