Even in the camp of Prussian historians the great mediaeval scholar Waitz opposed it successfully, thanks to his deeper knowledge of the subject and its sources, to his sense of judgment, and even to his historian's eyes.' With this polemical incisive spirit Sybel would seem to be of such a kind as to succeed rather in pamphlets than in history. He was, indeed, a wonderful writer of occasional pamphlets. At all the critical moments. of Prussian politics he wrote them. His first work of the kind was an anti-Catholic pamphlet, "The Holy Coat of Treves," published 1844. 1 Treitschke the historian, who on a number of points is as partial as Sybel, recognizes that the latter often allows himself to be carried away by his passion of patriotism. This is what he Bays of Sybel's " Origin of Kingship in Germany" "Sybel has that tendency of all philosophical brains to construct history and to gather together under one heading whole historical periods without always succeeding in a very happy fashion; he sometimes rashly attributes to the Middle Ages tendencies of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
