Twenty years ago it was important, in thelight of contemmrary practice, that some artist discover unity as applied to stage production. Even five years ago the ways of achieving a synthesis of the component parts of stage art seemed the most pressing theatrical prob lem. There has been legitimate excitement, too, over the discovery that a stage setting should be of a piece with the play and the acting: that there should be in charge an artist-director capable of visualizing the production as one harmonious whole: that the actor should subordinate his personality under the demands of dramatist and director: that modern inventions in lighting have opened new pos sibilities of re-enforcing theatrically the dramatist's intent.
