I found this book in my Bas Bleu catalog and I love it !!! You wonder who really needs the governess? Who has the backbone to destroy the packet of cocaine? I have given this book to all my dear friends with a warning....DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE......as usual, as in other films derived from books, they ruined it and the only common denominator is the the title. I think this book would be great for book clubs to discuss over tea. I highly recommend it and I wish Bas Bleu would restock it in their catalog again.

Pure escapism
Nothing like it would happen today but one suspects that it could have done in the time-frame of the story.

Self realization!
The source for a fairly successful movie starring Amy Adams, "Miss Pettigrew" has subtle differences, mainly in perspective. The story of a single middle aged woman at a dead end, Miss Pettigrew reveals dormant strengths, and carries the day. If success equals opportunity and our ability to take advantage, Miss Pettigrew comes out a winner. There is much internal monologue, which would not translate well to the screen, so the movie pads out the action. If you have seen the movie, I don't think you'll be disappointed; it is simply different. Some racial references almost poke your eyes out, but they are few in number, and if you can accept that they reflect their time (late 1930's), you'll be allright.

Spend the Day With Miss Pettigrew
What a delight this book was. I knew it would be lighthearted and fun. I was right. I love all the details that only women understand, like the clothes, jewelry, hairstyles, makeup and shoes. These are delivered in abundance in Miss Pettigrew. All the characters are endearing, especially Miss Pettigrew herself who is so sweet and has had such a long, dull, miserable life untill the day she accidentally met Miss LaFosse. She has a wonderful exciting day handling the man problems of Miss LaFosse and her friends. She gets a makeover, attends her first cocktail party and makes herself indispensable to all in a variety of amusing situations. The ending is vastly different than the movie (which was also wonderful) and is sure to please those of us whose hearts flutter over a properly happy ending. This book is a pleasure and made me smile "out loud" more than once. I will certainly it again.
